Ouch.
Julia Avila had her night cut short at Invicta FC 29 on Friday when she suffered a gruesome compound fracture of her left ring finger in the first round. Avila’s opponent, Marciea Allenthrew a kick and it landed awkwardly against her left hand, breaking her finger in gnarly fashion. Allen was ruled the winner by TKO due to injury just 49 seconds into the bout. It was the first loss of Avila’s career.
Afterward, Avila was in mostly good spirits, showing off the bone poking out from the skin to the cameras. She seemed to get a bit more emotional when she was brought to the hospital.
In an video posted to Instagram, Avila showed the badly broken finger again and nearly broke down explaining what happened. The California native said she would have preferred them just cut the finger off so she could continue her fight with Allen.
“Hey guys, I’m in the hospital,” Avila said. “I’m doing fine. If it were up to me, they would just cut off the finger and I would keep fighting, but this is what happened. I’m sorry. And I’ll be back soon. Love you guys. Thank you.”
Avila (4-1) was making her Invicta debut Friday night. The bantamweight owns career victories over UFC flyweight champion Nicco Montaño and UFC bantamweight contender Marion Reneau. Avila, 29, currently trains out of Oklahoma City.
