Junior middleweight contender Julian Williams picked up a Briscoe Award as the “2015 Philly Fighter of the Year” Sunday afternoon at Xfinity Live! In South Philadelphia. The annual event celebrates the best achievements of the Philadelphia fight scene, and is named for Philly boxing icon Bennie Briscoe. This was the ninth year for the event, which is presented by PhillyBoxingHistory.com.
Other winners included WBA junior lightweight champion Jason Sosa (Breakout Fighter of 2015), junior lightweight contender Tevin Farmer (2015 Performance of the Year), top-ranked super middleweight Jesse Hart (Prospect of the Year), heavyweight Joey Dawejko (KO of the Year), rising super middleweight Christopher Brooker (Rookie of the Year), 4-time national amateur champion Jaron Ennis (Amateur of the Year), and Amir Mansour vs. Joey Dawejko (2015 Philly Fight of the Year). Amateur boxer Atif Oberlton won a special prize, the “Everett Brothers Award”.
Each winner received either the Briscoe Award, a 15-inch statuette of 1970s middleweight legend Bennie Briscoe, or the Briscoe Medal, a solid bronze medallion featuring Briscoe’s likeness on the front and the Liberty Bell on the back.
