In a cold and rainy afternoon in Monterrey, Mexico former middleweight world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Dominick Britsch came face to face in the final press conference to promote their 10 round battle that will take place this Saturday in a card promoted by Zanfer Promotions in the Monterrey Arena and that will be televised in the United States by BeIN Sports Español at 11:00 p.m. Eastern/8:00 p.m. Pacific.
Chavez Jr and Britsch sat under a tarp to speak about their fight that well attended by local media and fans. Also at the presser where Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Juan Carlos Torres of Zanfer Promotions and Mexican Olympic gold medalist in the 1984 games in Los Angeles Raul Gonzalez director of Sports for the City of Monterrey and key a figure in bringing the fight here.
Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32 KOs) of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico a former World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion is coming back after a 17 month lay-off.
“It was important for me to fight and to get back in the ring. I am very happy to be able to do in Mexico where I have not fought since 2011. I will give my best to the fans and look forward to a great fight. Our style match up very well and it’s a can miss all action fight,” said Chavez Jr.
Chavez Sr. fought in Monterrey 22 years ago also on a December 10 against Tony “The Tiger” Lopez in the baseball stadium.
“I remember making a world title defense against Lopez in the baseball stadium and the fans came out to support me and they became great fans of mine and would travel to fights in masses from then on. I have a lot of love for the people of Monterrey,” said Chavez Sr.
Chavez refused to speculate on his future after this fight.
“First things first, I need to beat Britsch this Saturday, see how I look and them go from there. I know there are fights out there that a very interesting, but I need to win to even think about whast next. I know I am prepared and ready to shine,” said Chavez Jr.
Britsch (32-2-1, 11 KOs) of Germany, has won six of his last seven fights and should be a good test for the former world champion.
“I want to thank the people of Monterrey for their great hospitality, everyone has been great and I look forward to giving them a great fight. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain in the fight. I am the underdog but I come to win”, said Britsch
Britsch was scheduled to fight for a world title earlier this year but that fight never happened.
“Fighting for a world title would have been great, but I think this fight against Chavez Jr. will a bigger impact in my career, because a win here on Saturday night would put my career in another level” said Brit
In the Co-feature fight of the night undefeated blue-chip prospect Jaime Muguia (21-0, 15 KO’s) of Tijuana will take on Alvaron “Tyson” Robles (29-6, 20 KOs) of Mexicali in a 10 round fight at welterweight.
The official weight-in will be tomorrow at noon at the Monterrey Arena.
