Benavidez (27-5), a former two-time title challenger, finished his Brazilian foe with a first-round TKO in their initial scrap in 2013. In his most recent outing, Benavidez pushed his win streak to two with a decision over Dustin Ortiz in January. Prior to this, he finished Alex Perez late in the first round in December. To date, his last loss came in the form of a narrow split decision to Sergio Pettis at UFC 225 last June.
Benavidez also holds notable victories over fellow title challengers John Moraga, Ali Bagautinov, Tim Elliott, Eddie Wineland and current flyweight champ Henry Cejudo.
Formiga (23-5) is currently riding a four-fight winning streak inside the Octagon. In his most recent outing, he handed Deiveson Figueiredo his first professional loss with a dominant decision at UFC Nashville last month. Prior to this, fans saw Formiga edge out Pettis while also submitting Ben Nguyen and Ulka Sasaki.
In addition, promotion officials also confirmed a lightweight fight between Drew Dober and Marco Polo Reyes and a heavyweight tilt between Maurice Greene and Junior Albini. A light heavyweight bout between Roman Dolidze and Vinicius Moreira has also been added to the card.
UFC on ESPN 4 will go down inside the Target Center in Minneapolis on June 29. With these latest additions, here is how the rest of the card stands:
- Tyron Woodley vs. Robbie Lawler
- Joseph Benavidez vs. Jussier Formiga
- Drew Dober vs. Marco Polo Reyes
- Maurice Greene vs. Junior Albini
- Roman Dolidze vs. Vinicius Moreira
