Former WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje announced on Twitter that he’s signed a UFC contract.
Former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion Justin Gaethje appears to finally be UFC bound. Having entered free agency (or was he ever a free agent, Ray Sefo?) following his December win over Luiz Firmino, the undefeated Gaethje wrote on his Twitter account that he’s signed a contract with the UFC.
@ufc Lets C one of the “big league boys” put me to sleep. I want the scariest lightweight possible first. This 0 has to go! Contract signed

He later made this statement on his Instagram page.

“Thank you for all the support to this point, I signed my contract with the UFC yesterday. It feels good to know the sacrifices my family and I have made since starting wrestling at 4 yrs old, have led us to these great endeavors. My parents spent their hard earned money, love, and energy to ensure I got the chance to put this hard work to fruition and I’ll be damned if I don’t give it 100%. Now I get a chance to fight and be the best in the world at something. It won’t last long and I may or may not be successful, but I do know I would not be here without having parents which showed me through their actions that hard work is not easy, who loved and believed in me everyday. #ufc#mma #hardwork #fight”
Gaethje (17-0) fought under the WSOF banner for four years, winning the promotion’s title in 2014 with a nice 69-second beatdown of Rich Patishnock. Only Melvin Guillard went the distance with him during this stretch, but that was a non-title bout due to Guillard missing weight. The 28-year-old is best known for his epic slugfests with Luis Palomino, with both bouts ending in TKO finishes. His notoriously brutal leg kicks have crippled multiple opponents, including former UFC fighter Brian Foster.
There are so many options across the board for Gaethje to fight in his Octagon debut (which hasn’t been made official yet by the UFC themselves), but Gaethje has his eyes on Edson Barboza.
