Super flyweight champions Kal Yafai (WBA) and Jerwin Ancajas (IBF) appear to be on a collision course. Yafai has joined Ancajas’ May 26th title defense against Jonas Sultan, taking on Mexican veteran David Carmona as part of an ESPN+ doubleheader.
The card does not yet have a location, although it will take place somewhere in the United States.
Yafai (23-0, 14 KO) easily handled an overweight Luis Concepcion for the title back in 2016, then defeated Japan’s Suguru Muranaka and Sho Ishida in 2017. He also has a 2015 decision win over Cristofer Rosales that’s improving with age.
Carmona (21-5-5, 9 KO) survived 12 rounds of Naoya Inoue and gave Carlos Cuadras a surprisingly tough out before getting absolutely shellacked by Daniel Lozano. If he comes in at his best, he has the skills to at least give Yafai a decent fight.
This fight is really just a prelude to Yafai vs. Ancajas, though, and that could be a genuinely terrific scrap if all this setup goes smoothly.
