Dustin Poirier is one of the most exciting and aggressive fighters in the UFC, but the 28-year-old will be heading into UFC 208 against Jim Miller with a different approach.

Poirier’s first-round knockout loss to Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night 94 forced ‘The Diamond’ to reassess his fighting style.

While Poirier still plans to put on a show for the fans and look for the finish, the No. 10 ranked lightweight will be more ‘defensively responsible’ against Miller.

“It’s important for me to protect myself,” Poirier told FOX Sports in a recent interview. I have no fear when I get in there. I need to have more respect for these guys,” Poirier said. “Everybody’s dangerous with a pair of four-ounce gloves. I know I’m better than them. They’re dangerous and they’re fighting to feed their families.

“From here on out the name of this camp is be more defensively responsible. When you see me in the cage you’re going to see a smarter fighter. I’m not going to be a boring fighter. I’m still going to take risks but I’m going to take calculated risks.”

Poirier, who has finished 16 of his 20 wins via stoppage, has also cut down on the sparring in hopes of increasing his longevity in the sport.

“This camp I’ve done the least amount of sparring that I’ve ever done,” Poirier said. “Of course I’m still working a lot and getting the work done but it’s less and further timing between sparring sessions.

“For longevity, I want to fight another seven or eight years, I’m looking at it and trying to be smart.”

Poirier’s loss to Johnson broke a four-fight win streak, and the Florida-based fighter will look to re-establish himself as a top contender with a win over Miller.

Poirier vs. Miller will take place later tonight, Feb. 11, at the UFC 208 pay-per-view in Brooklyn, New York.
