Luis Nery pulls the plug on June 9 fight after WBC ultimatum

Former bantamweight titleholder Luis Nery (26-0, 20 KOs) has succumb to the pressure of the WBC which has caused him to pull out of his scheduled June 9th fight with Jetro Pabustan.

Nery had been stripped of the WBC bantamweight title after he failed to make weight for his rematch against Shinsuke Yamanaka in March. That fight would go on however, and Nery would blitz Yamanaka in two rounds , which ultimately retired the Japanese fighter.

For missing weight so badly the WBC would indefinitely suspend Nery, which wouldn’t prevent him from fighting altogether, but kept him out of the WBC’s good graces and unable to contend for one of their titles.

But after a meeting with Nery and the WBC, the fighter has opted to smooth things over with sanctioning body by continuing to accept his suspension until he meets certains conditions they will place on him. Zanfer Promotions released this statement on behalf of Nery yesterday:

“Along with his representatives, Luis Nery attended an audience on March 9 [with WBC representatives],” the organization said in a statement on Monday. “During this hearing, the position of the WBC was to reach a settlement after considering the best way to help the boxer return to the ring and also to eventually contest the world championship of the World Boxing Council. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman put forward two clear options to Luis Nery. The first was for him to accept the conditions of the WBC in order to correct the problems which led him to lose the world title. The second option was for Nery to ignore the body and pursue his career on a different path. Nery clarified that he would follow any regulation imposed by the WBC. We deeply regret the decision of Nery to fight while being suspended by the WBC. Due to this action, it is clear that his decision has changed.”

Now Nery, 23, is not expected to fight again until he makes good with the WBC. But what that will specifically entail has not been made public at this time.
