Luis Nery (26-0, 20 KOs), the former bantamweight titleholder, is set to return to action tomorrow night in his hometown of Tijuana, Mexico where he’ll be taking on Filipino fighter Jason Canoy 27-8-2, 19 KOs). The fight will be streamed live on ESPN+, starting at 11 p.m. ET, per a Top Rank announcement.
This fight will mark Nery’s first action since March when he came in well over the weight limit for a rematch with Shinsuke Yamanaka in Tokyo. Despite coming in heavy, and being stripped of his world title because of it, the fight went ahead and Nery would brutalize Yamanaka in just two rounds. The WBC, however, would then suspend Nery indefinitely until he could get his act together — which he apparently now has as the WBC has lifted his suspension.
Speaking on this return bout against Canoy, Nery said:
“I get nervous just thinking that I will fight at home, at Gasmart,” Nery said at the final news conference Thursday. “I have a great commitment, and I will give a great show. I have an obligation to my promoter, Fernando Beltran, and all the fans to score a great victory in my return. We’re ready.”
The bout’s co-feature will have Kenia Enriquez (20-1, 9 KOs) defending her interim junior flyweight title against Norleidys Graterol (7-0, 7 KOs).
