Luke Campbell will return to action on this Friday’s DAZN card, headlined by the Tevin Farmer-Jono Carroll super featherweight title bout in Philadelphia.

Campbell (19-2, 15 KO) will face Mexico’s Adrian Young (26-5-2, 20 KO) in a 10-round fight on the undercard.

Campbell, 31, won bantamweight gold at the 2012 London Olympics, and has done well as a pro. He was upset by Yvan Mendy back in 2015, but bounced back nicely, and avenged that defeat in his last outing, topping Mendy in their Sept. 2018 rematch. He’s had one world title shot, losing a split decision to Jorge Linares in 2017.

He’s currently the WBC mandatory challenger for their lightweight title, which is currently sort of in limbo. The belt is held by Mikey Garcia, who fights on Saturday in an attempt to win a title at welterweight against Errol Spence Jr.

Campbell has said he really isn’t expecting to face Garcia, but that he figures one way or another he’ll fight for the WBC belt this year, and says that right now it’s just about staying sharp:

“I cannot sit around and wait without fighting, I’m hungry, I want to be the best and fulfil my dream of becoming a world champion. … We’re waiting to hear what’s happening with the WBC — it’s frustrating not knowing what is happening but it’s Mikey’s decision, there’s nothing I can do. I have to take things into my own hands and stay busy, which is what Philadelphia is about, before we see what is next.”

The 26-year-old Young is a non-contender from Los Mochis, and is coming in on clearly short notice. He’s meant to lose here, to keep Campbell busy and moving toward that title fight.
