Luke Campbell would welcome Mikey Garcia fight ‘down the line’

Luke Campbell has been on the road to a WBC lightweight title shot, which, as it stands now, would lead him into a fight with Mikey Garcia. And “down the line,” Campbell says he’d definitely be up for it.

Campbell (15-1, 12 KO), who won gold at London 2012, has rebounded nicely from a 2015 loss to Yvan Mendy, claiming the WBC “silver” title at 135 pounds. He checked out Garcia’s recent win over Dejan Zlaticanin, and was impressed — with some reservations:

“He performed brilliantly that night and got an absolutely brutal knockout against a very strong opponent. I do believe that guy was slightly made for him, in styles. He was walking on to everything – not the best game-plan to walk in in straight lines and show no head movement in front of a big puncher who can box, and has speed and power. I thought it was made for him really, but he is a brilliant fighter and hopefully down the line, who knows?”

Campbell’s promoter Eddie Hearn added, “Of all the lightweights out there, I think Campbell is probably one of the best styles to do well against Garcia.”

Garcia (36-0, 30 KO) has won world titles in three weight classes and doesn’t seem to have missed a step after an absence that kept him away from the ring between January 2014 and July 2016. His fight with Zlaticanin was just his second since 2014, but he once again looked sensational.

Campbell is currently slated to face Jairo Perez (21-6, 14 KO) on February 25 in Hull.
