Luke Wilton hopes to close in on British title shot with Ulster Hall win

Luke Wilton [18(7)-5(1)-1] hopes victory on the first confirmed Irish card of 2019 will move him to within one fight of a British title shot.

‘Winky’ ended a 20 month period out of the ring with victory over game Bulgarian Georgi Georgiev on the Back in Belfast card last month and returns in extra quick time on the MHD Promotions ‘A Night To Remember’ card on Saturday February 9th.

The 30-year-old super flyweight is keen to return to domestic level but would like two more fights starting with his scheduled Ulster Hall bout before looking toward the likes of the British title.

The Lonsdale belt was last held by former foe Charlie Edwards – who challenges WBC flyweight champion and recent Paddy Barnes defeater Cristofer Rosales next week – and the Belfast fighter is keen to position himself for a shot over the next few months.

Outlining his plans, Wilton told Irish-Boxing.com that “I hope to have maybe one more fight after this, all being well, [before looking toward a bigger fight].”

“I’m not really sure of the path yet but I think the British is vacant so that could be an option.”

The former British and Commonwealth flyweight title challenger has only fought three times since May of 2014 and, in that respect, is delighted to have a date so early after his November win.

Now training full-time with Benny Checa, the Eastside man has the rare luxury of activity.

“I’m all good just started back training this week. I’m glad to have this fight. I wanted to be out around February-March time,” he added before calling for an opponent that can give him rounds in their scheduled six.

“I would like someone similar to my last opponent,” he noted. “A fighter that wants to fight and is durable.”
