There is a reason why they call Ma Jia Wen the “Cannon,” and it is because of the raw power the 21-year-old packs in his fists.
On 9 March, the Chinese national freestyle wrestling silver medalist showcased grappling dominance, combined with a forceful left hand, to defeat Pakistan’s Ahmed “Wolverine” Mujtaba at ONE: VISIONS OF VICTORY at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
After an exuberant display of offense from the two men, it was Ma who pulled away in the second round to score his third-straight victory.
Mujtaba looked inspired entering the contest, immediately shooting for a double leg takedown in the opening sequence. The “Wolverine” is mainly a grappler, as evidenced by the four submission wins already on his resume. Knowing full well that Ma packed raw power in his hands, the Pakistani wisely looked to take matters to the ground early.
However, Ma is a different animal, and he appeared determined to put forth another impressive performance.
Each time the Chinese athlete was taken to the ground, he was able to get back up, and quite easily so, much to the surprise of Mujtaba. On the feet, Ma stalked his Pakistani foe, and threatened with fierce combinations.
Most of the opening stanza was spent with Mujtaba trying to fend off Ma’s advances, which quickly sapped his energy.
Towards the end of the first round, a huge left hook from Ma landed right on Mujtaba’s chin, sending “Wolverine” crashing to the mat, but he held on to be saved by the bell. At the start of the second frame, he appeared absolutely spent, and was breathing quite heavily.
After being able to take “Wolverine” to the ground once again, Ma swiftly secured his opponent’s back, flattened him out, and locked in a rear-naked choke to seal the deal. The official finish came at 2:38 of round two, as Mujtaba had no choice but to tap out with the choke in deep.
It was another exciting performance from “Cannon,” who is known for his aggressiveness. Ma is now riding a three-bout winning streak, with all of of those wins coming by scintillating finish.
With the victory, Ma improves his overall record to 5-2, while Mujtaba suffers just the second loss of his career and falls to 9-2.
