Alberto Machado wasted no time tonight on HBO.

Alberto Machado has become a star on HBO boxing just as the network is winding down its run in the sport.

Machado improved to 21-0 (17 KO) with a first round wipeout of Yuandale Evans, dropping the challenger three times en route to an easy defense of his WBA “world” super featherweight title.

Evans (20-2, 14 KO) was dropped just over a minute into the fight, going down on a straight left hand from the southpaw Machado. Evans got up and threw punches, but was down again not long after, rocked on one shot and dropped at the end of a flurry. An uppercut and then a right hook finished things off after Evans got up again.

In the end, it looked a lot like Evans’ last attempt to step up in competition, when he was thrashed in one by Javier Fortuna back in 2012. He’s a talented fighter, but it just hasn’t been there against his two best opponents.

For what it’s worth, CompuBox had Machado landing 28 of 56 (50%) of his punches, and a staggering 22 of 30 (73%) of his power shots. Evans threw punches, but didn’t land much, going 5 of 43 (12%) overall and 3 of 23 (13%) on power punches.
