FILIPINO boxer Carlo “The Ferocious” Magali is now the new Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super featherweight champion after Japanese Ito relinquished the title last September 3 in Japan.
According to OPBF secretary general Juan Ramon Guanzon, Ito has failed to defend his title for one year already and was ordered to defend it against OPBF silver bantamweight champion Magali in October.
But Ito, through Japanese boxing official Tsuyoshi Yasukochi said that he will no longer defend his title after his non-title fight last Sept. 2 in Japan – a 6th round technical knockout win against Filipino Glenn Enterina.
“Magali, who was the OPBF Silver champion has been declared as the new OPBF regular champion after Ito relinquished it,” said Guanzon.
Magali (22W-9L-3D, 11 KOs) will now have a mandatory title defense against a still unnamed challenger.
Magali’s manager Brico Santig of Highland Promotions said that his ward might defend it in China or in the Philippines during the OPBF Convention.
“We will still discuss it during the next OPBF ratings meeting on Sept. 29,” said Santig.
The 30-year old Boholano previously stopped Sandeep Balhara via a 10th round TKO last July 9 at the Mid Valley Exhibition Center in Kuala Lumpur to retain his OPBF Silver super featherweight title.
Magali is a former IBF Pan Pacific super featherweight champion. He won it by knocking out David Browne Jr. in the 12th round on Sept. 11, 2015 at the Ingleburn RSL Club in Ingleburn, New South Wales, Australia.
Browne never woke up from the knockout and passed away after his life support was switched off in the early hours of Sept. 15.
Magali also fought in five separate title bouts. But he lost four of them while the other one ended in a majority draw with Dennis Tubieron for the vacant WBC International featherweight crown in 2014 at the Elorde Sports Complex in Paranaque City.
He dropped a unanimous decision to Vincent Palicte in their battle for the WBC International bantamweight title in 2009 in Manila. He then bowed to Andrey Bogdanov also by a UD for the vacant WBO Oriental featherweight crown in 2013 at the Gigant Hall in Parkhod, Pskov.
Magali also lost to Emmanuel Tagoe via a 9th round TKO for the WBA International lightweight title last July 15, 2016 at the Accra Sports Stadium n Accra, Africa. Magali’s last defeat was an 8th round retirement to Pavel Malikov at the DIVS, Ekaterinburg last Nov. 18 for the WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver lightweight title.
