The fighter who caused the biggest upset in heavyweight Boxing history is coming to Mexico, to receive a timely accolade from Hublot Watches at the St Regis Hotel in Mexico City.
On February 11th 1990, James “Buster” Douglas TKO’d formidable Mike Tyson in the tenth round in Tokyo. Only the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas gave any odds at all. Buster was 42-1 against.
Only his Family and friends believed in him. Buster’s Mother Lula Pearl, who was such an important inspiration for him, died twenty three days before the fight against Mike Tyson. Absolutely determined to justify her confidence, Buster used his twelve inch reach advantage to outjab, outbox and outfight Mike, badly swelling his right eye almost shut.
Buster survived an eighth round knockdown via a Tyson right uppercut, returning the blow two rounds later, followed up by a four punch combination. And a felled, befuddled “Iron” Mike, wasn’t able to best the count.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman who announced the forthcoming Wednesday visit of Buster to the St Regis Hotel, on Avenida Reforma, when the big hand reaches six, said: “It is a presentation of Hublot Watches. They are strong supporters of the WBC. James “Buster” Doiglas is coming to honor Hublot Watches and the Jose Sulaiman Fund.”
Recalling that fabled Buster win over Tyson, Mauricio said: “Buster’s Mother was a great inspiration. Such was his determination that no one could have beaten Buster that night. We underestimate the power of the heart and mind.”
