MAMA, TEJARES MAKE WEIGHTS IN “BRAWL AT THE MALL: THE YOUNG GUNZ”

GEN. SANTOS CITY — Undefeated Jayson Mama of Gensan and his opponent Rodel Tejares of Bukidnon both made their weights last Saturday for their 10-rounder fight in the main event of the “Brawl at the Mall: The Young Gunz” set on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Robinson’s Place here.
Mama tipped the scales at 111 lbs while Tejares submitted 112 lbs.
The 20-year old Mama is still undefeated with seven straight wins with three knockouts. The young boxer from Barangay Bula previously won a second round technical knockout against a more experienced Bimbo Nacionales last Sept. 9 in Polomolok.
Mama is again facing another more experienced fighter in Tejares, who already has a total of 72 fights.
The 33-year old Tejares has 21 wins with six knockouts but has 44 losses and seven draws. He lost to Aries Buenavidez by a first round TKO last July 24 in Koronadal City.
Tejares, however, is a veteran of championship fights.
In his last title-fight, Tejares bowed to Dexter Alimento by a unanimous decision for the vacant Mindanao Professional Boxing Federation (MinProBA) light flyweight title last March 31, 2016.
Before that, Tejares also dropped a UD to Ronie Tanallon for the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) minimumweight title at the Gaisano Mall of Gensan last February 13.
Tejares’ first championship was when he challenged WBO Inter-Continental minimumweight champion Ryan Bito but got lost by a UD last Dec. 15, 2007 at the Elorde Sports Center.
Tejares then fought but lost by a 2nd round TKO to MinProBA light flyweight champion Jether Oliva last Dec. 16, 2008 at the Oval Plaza in Gensan.
Tejares went to Huili, China to but suffered a split decision to Chao Zhong Xiong for the interim WBC Asian Boxing Council light flyweight title on Jun 27, 2011.
Tejares then dropped a UD to former world champion Merlito Sabillo in their battle for the vacant OPBF minimumweight title last Oct. 8, 2011 in Bacolod City.
Tejares’ next title fight was against Thai Sutep Wangmuk for the PABA super flyweight crown held at the Ayutthaya Park in Ayutthaya, Thailand last Nov. 13, 2012.. He lost by a 3rd round TKO.
“Tejares is a veteran fighter and should not be taken lightly,” said Mama.
Mama’s twin brother Jerven (2W-0L, 2 Kos) is also seeing action in the undercard promoted by Sanman Promotions.
Jerven, a super flyweight, is fighting Joey Antonio (3W-5L-3D) of Pres. Roxas, North Cotabato for six rounds.
Also pitted in the card is the undefeated reigning IBF Youth super flyweight champion Jade Bornea (9W-0L, 6 KOs) against John Rey Lauza (13W-15L-4D, 6 KOs) of Zamboanga del Sur.
Bornea made 116 lbs. while Lauza was only 113 lbs. during the official weigh-in held at the Robinson’s Place.
