Are Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach done?

Manny Pacquiao’s team has sent out press releases about a June 24 fight with Lucas Matthysse, which isn’t yet finalized, but one thing was missing when trainers were mentioned: the name of Freddie Roach.

So are Pacquiao and Roach done as a team?

… [T]he press release, sent late Friday morning, specifically mentioned that “Restituto ‘Buboy’ Fernandez, Nonoy Neri and Roger ‘Haplas’ Fernandez will take charge once the training camp starts.”

The statement also said that “Pacquiao will start his training in the middle of April in his own Wild Card Boxing Gym in General Santos City. Training will transfer to Manila from May 14 to June 1 then back to Gensan from June 2 until the second week of June.”

Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KO) has trained with Roach since 2001, when he defeated Lehlohonolo Ledwaba on two weeks’ notice for the IBF super bantamweight title. Their pairing has led to incredible, well-documented success.

That said, fighters and trainers sometimes hit a wall, and changes are made. Pacquiao is 39 and past his prime either way, but maybe he just doesn’t feel like he’s gaining anything working with Roach anymore.

Or maybe this will all blow over and Roach will be back in camp with Manny, if indeed there is a camp to be in in the first place.
