Premier Boxing Champions is really going all-out with this Saturday’s clash between Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia. In addition to the supporting cast on the main CBS broadcast, the organization has added some heft to the undercard in the form of series regulars Mario Barrios and Sergey Lipinets.
Barrios (17-0, 9 KO), a 6’0″ super lightweight prospect from my hometown of San Antonio, will be taking on Yardley Suarez (20-6, 11 KO), a 22-year-old journeyman who fought a staggering eighteen times from 2015 through 2016. It’s about par for the course for Barrios, whose career has been more quantity than quality so far. Still, he’s only 21, so I can forgive him some soft touches at this point.
Lipinets (11-0, 9 KO), meanwhile, will face Thurman stablemate Clarence Booth (14-2, 7 KO). This is basically a stay-busy fight for Lipinets, who became the mandatory IBF challenger by knocking out Lenny Zappavigna in December. He’ll presumably face the winner of Ricky Burns vs. Julius Indongo later this year.
Booth lost an eight-rounder to Alex Saucedo a year ago.
Not great matchups, obviously, but Lipinets is always must-watch. Worth a look, I’d say.
