Mark Breland, a trainer for Deontay Wilder and a former great in his own right, will be in the corner this weekend when his fighter defends his world title against Tyson Fury. And when asked about his expectations for the fight by Michael Woods, on behalf of RingTV, Breland gave his plain and honest assessment.
“The Fury win is going the distance,” Breland told me. “As long as he doesn’t get kayoed, he can say, ‘Wilder didn’t get me out of there.’ His whole thing will be to go the distance.
“He will stink it up,” Breland said, and I told him I agreed with that. “But around maybe the ninth and 10th, if Fury starts to tire, if he gets caught, it’s a wrap.”
Fury has been constantly telling the public that he’s going to knock Wilder out cold, but really that’s just promotion. Breland’s assessment will prove to be much more accurate. Fury is an excellent boxer, but he’s not much of a puncher. So when asked to give his final prediction on what will happen on Saturday night, Breland says if Wilder stops Fury it’ll be in the late rounds, but that Fury will be doing everything he can just to see the final bell.
