An exciting performance on live TV could lay the groundwork for a world-title match in 2017.
Hanzel Martinez and Emmanuel Quartey will get it on over a scheduled 12 rounds for the vacant WBA International super bantamweight title at the Downtown Las Vegas Event Center on Friday, September 9.
Fighting out of Tijuana since 2009, 24-year-old Martinez (23-2, 18 KOs) is 15th-ranked by the WBA. A nephew of Antonio Margarito, “Rude Boy” last fought this past December, stopping Jose Silveria by fourth-round TKO.
A Ghanaian, Quartey is a five-year pro (20-2, 19 KOs) who last fought this past September, stopping Isaac Nettey by seventh-round TKO.
“Fighting in Las Vegas is a dream come true for Hanzel,” says Guy Taylor of Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions. “Hanzel is such an honest fighter, he gives the fight fans what they want to see every time out.”
Martinez may indeed bring it, given that both a win and an exciting performance on live TV (the bout will air on CBS Sports Network) could lay the groundwork for a world-title match in 2017.
