By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally admitted that he carried UFC fighter Conor McGregor in their big mega-fight on PPV last summer on August 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather says he carried the 29-year-old McGregor to make him look good.
In a post on Instagram, Mayweather leveled criticism at his old nemesis Oscar De La Hoya, who recently called out McGregor for a fight. Mayweather points out that De La Hoya is a “hypocrite” for wanting to fight McGregor after bad-mouthing Mayweather for fighting him last August. Mayweather thinks it’s ironic that De La Hoya has decided to try and fight McGregor too after the way he gave him bad press for taking the match against the inactive UFC star last summer on Showtime pay-per-view
“Wasn’t Oscar De La Hoya the same one that was talking about me fighting Conor McGregor?” said Mayweather on his Instagram. “He was trying to stop the fight. Now he’s trying to fight Conor McGregor. Is he a hypocrite or is he back on coke again?” said Mayweather.
Last month, De La Hoya said he’s back in training and ready to knockout McGregor in 2 rounds if he agrees to fight him. De La Hoya is pushing hard for that fight. So far, McGregor hasn’t said anything about wanting to take De La Hoya up on his offer, but you never know. McGregor doesn’t look like he’s going to return to the UFC to ever fight again. If he’s finished with that sport, then it wouldn’t be surprising to see McGregor in with De La Hoya if Mayweather isn’t going to fight him in a rematch. I think that’s the fight that McGregor wants. He made $100 million fighting Mayweather last August. That was a career high payday for McGregor. He can probably still make a bundle for facing Mayweather in a second fight.
It’s obviously not good that Mayweather is saying he carried McGregor, because that makes their previous fight look like it wasn’t on the level. If this were another sport and a team admitted to taking it easy on another team because they wanted to make it interesting for the fans, there would be a great deal of anger from fans. If Mayweather has any intention of fighting McGregor in a rematch, he may be hurting himself by letting the boxing and MMA fans know that he took it easy on him.
”Everyone was trying to protest the Mayweather-McGregor fight, right?” said Mayweather. ”But I’m going to tell you all the truth. You know I carried McGregor. You know I made him look good for you all. Conor McGregor, you lucky I was generous, you little [expletive],” said Mayweather.
The Mayweather vs. McGregor fight was under the rules of boxing, and it was surprisingly competitive for the first 4 rounds. There were already huge hints that Mayweather carried McGregor. Mayweather was fighting at a slow pace, plodding forward like he was in 1st gear the entire fight. We didn’t see the speed and defensive skills from Mayweather that he’d shown in the past. Mayweather fought like he was taking it easy on McGregor. Now that Mayweather is admitting that he carried McGregor, it arguably tarnishes the fight by making it look like it was a joke, which many boxing fans already believe.
The many fans that bet on the Mayweather-McGregor fight likely won’t be too pleased at hearing Mayweather admit to carrying McGregor. That makes the fight look like a sham. Fans watch fights because they believe both competitors are trying their best inside the boxing ring.
