Mayweather comments on Thurman-Garcia, says there’s no competition for him

By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. saw last Saturday’s unification fight between WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman and WBC champion Danny Garcia, and he wasn’t impressed with what he saw from them. The 40-year-old Mayweather says there still isn’t any competition for him in the sport.

Thurman, 28, would likely beg to differ with Mayweather’s comment. Some of those right hands that Thurman was hitting Garcia with in the first four rounds would have likely landed on Mayweather’s chin if he was the one sharing the ring with him. Thurman would be a very tough fight for the ring rusty Mayweather, who hasn’t fought in 2 years since his win over Andre Berto in 2015. Mayweather is now retired from boxing, and just looking to snag a fight against non-boxer Conor McGregor.

That would be a mismatch of course for Mayweather. It would be a different story if Mayweather had to actually fight a real boxer with skills and power like Thurman.

“I’m sitting at the hotel the other day and watching the fight with the fighters, Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia,” said Mayweather. “Congratulations to both participants, but I said at my age, there’s still no competition for me,” said Mayweather.

It would be nice if Mayweather were to return to the ring to test his theory about there not being any competition for him in boxing. There would be some top fighters that would like to share the ring with him starting with Thurman. Gennady Golovkin has also volunteered to move down to 154 to fight Mayweather. He would put himself at a disadvantage so that he could face Mayweather.

Saul Canelo Alvarez would also likely jump at the chance of fighting Mayweather. I wonder if Mayweather sees him as no competition too. Kell Brook and Errol Spence Jr. would also be options for Mayweather, as would Manny Pacquiao. There are plenty of fights available to Mayweather if he came back, and I’m not sure that he would win them all. At this point, Mayweather could probably beat Danny Garcia, Brook and Pacquiao.

Those would be winnable fights for him. But it would be asking a lot of Mayweather’s tired legs for him to beat Golovkin, Canelo, Spence and Thurman. Those would be fights in which Mayweather would be getting hit with a lot of hard punches that he’d have to be able to take. Mayweather’s last wins before retiring were against Pacquiao, Marcos Maidana, Andre Berto and Robert Guerrero. Mayweather didn’t take on anyone with speed and power. Maidana had power, but he was very slow of hand.
