By Chris Williams: Conor McGregor is still at least 10 pounds over the 154 lb. limit for his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. this Saturday night, according to Mayweather. He says McGregor is weighing 164 lbs. right now, and he’s going to need to pay a hefty fine amounting to millions by the time the two fighters face each other this Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mayweather looks like he’s got his weight right now judging by trim he looked today. McGregor still looks very big. if he’s going to get that weight, he’ll need to get it off in a real hurry by Saturday to avoid giving away big money.
“Conor McGregor is extremely heavy right now,” Mayweather said to Fighthype. “I think he’s 164, so he’s still got 10 pounds to go. I mean ya’ll get that extra money if you can’t make the weight. Get them extra millions ready, Dana!”
Mayweather says he’s going to get some of that money from McGregor and adding it to his piggy bank for the fight. McGregor has only got 3 days to lose a mess of weight if he’s 10 lbs. over the weight limit. If you break that down, McGregor is going to need to lose over 3 lbs. per day. He might be a weight drained shell of himself by the time he arrives at the weigh-in on Friday. The last thing McGregor, 20, needs is for him to be still cutting weight on the day of the fight, but it looks like that’s going to be the case. McGregor would need to hit the treadmill awfully hard for him to lose the last pounds for him to make weight.
It’s unclear what the weight penalty is for coming in over the limit. It wouldn’t be all that surprising if the penalty is a huge one. It’s important for Mayweather that he not be outweighed by a massive amount of weight by McGregor on fight night. Mayweather will likely coming into the fight in the 150s. If McGregor is in the near 180 lbs. on the night of the fight, you can understand what kind of problems that would present for the 40-year-old Mayweather.
Mayweather doesn’t say how he knows how much McGregor, 29, is weighing right now, but it appears that he has a spy in his camp that is feeding him the information about McGregor’s weight and what the game plan is for the fight. If McGregor is still 10 lbs. over the 154lb contract limit for the fight, then he may lose the small chance that he had in winning the fight if he has to lose the weight at the last second.
It’s not surprising that McGregor is still heavy because the size difference between the two fighters was extraordinary when the two of them were standing side by side. McGregor looked like a super middleweight standing next to a middleweight. It was always going to be a problem for a buy the size of McGregor to make the 154lb limit, but it’s surprising that he agreed to the weight limit in the first place. With McGregor being out of the octagon for so long, he should have known better. McGregor might have been able to weasel a higher weight if he had complained long and hard enough about the 154lb weight limit being too light for him.
“Or the UFC, get them extra millions ready or somebody got to pay a fine. But he got to get that weight down. A true champion, you know, like I said before, a true champion is disciplined and very responsible. But, you know, we’ll see,” said Mayweather.
Mayweather sounds very certain about McGregor being overweight still. That’s too bad if that’s the case because McGregor is finally making the big money after all these years in the UFC, working hard for the money he gets in the sport. It would be a pity if McGregor has to give away a substantial portion of his purse to weight fines. Poor McGregor, but perhaps that was his plan all along.
McGregor giving away a few million to him being over the 154lb limit may end up being worth if it he can take Mayweather’s scalp on Saturday night, and then make many more millions in a rematch in late 2017. We’ve seen plenty of boxers use that strategy in the past to win fights. Coming in overweight makes sense when there’s no title on the line, and when winning is all that counts. The casual boxing and MMA fans won’t care if McGregor comes in over the 154lb weight limit. They only care that he wins the fight and hands Mayweather his first loss of his career.
”I don’t think he’s going to make the weight. Even if he do make the weight, that’s even better,” said Mayweather. ”But if he don’t make the weight, we still going to fight but it’s going to be a heavy fine, I’m going to get me that money!” said Mayweather.
It sounds bad for McGregor no matter what happens. If McGregor doesn’t make weight, he’ll be coughing up a ton of money and likely be weight drained for the fight on Saturday. If McGregor does make weight, he’ll probably be weight drained too from the ordeal that he had to go through to make weight. Either way, McGregor is up against it. I knew McGregor would have problems with his weight when I saw him during the press tour. McGregor looked way too big for him to make the 154lb weight limit.
I figured that McGregor would have enough sense to get in training camp and start taking the weight off a lot earlier so he wouldn’t be at this point where he’s 10 lbs. over the 154lb weight limit with just 3 days to go. This is just bad all away around if you’re McGregor or one of his diehard fans. Mayweather is going to have an easier time than I expected him to have. If McGregor is dead at the weight, he’s not going to be able to put him any kind of fight. His corner might as well get the towel ready to throw it into the ring once it’s clear that he’s not competitive and just taking a beating.
