‘Personal stuff’ may have cost Megan Anderson her spot against Cris Cyborg at UFC 214, but the Aussie is still pushing hard for that fight when she returns.
For a brief moment, Aussie featherweight Megan Anderson was set to make a spectacular UFC debut. The Invicta interim featherweight champion had been signed to take on Cristiane Justino, better known as Cris Cyborg, for the newly vacated UFC women’s featherweight title at UFC 214.
And then, suddenly, the fight was off.
While speculation ran rampant over Anderson’s mental state, possible visa issues, or even a potential pregnancy, Anderson maintains that some “personal stuff” outside of her control is the real culprit. Although she still won’t elaborate on what that personal stuff is.
In a recent interview for the Sean, Funky, and the Baddest Man podcast, Anderson attempted to give some clarity to her feelings at the moment and deny some of the rumors floating around (transcript via MMA Fighting).
“I understand where people are coming from, but honestly I don’t owe anyone an explanation. I have personal stuff. Say if you had personal s**t you were dealing with. Would you want the whole world pressing you and forcing you to try to tell them? No, you’d probably be like, ‘F**k you guys, this is my s**t.’”
…
“I want to make one thing clear and that’s unfortunately this is out of my control and I didn’t want to have to pull out of the fight. I was ready for that fight. I wanted that fight more than anything. I’m definitely not scared of Cris and hopefully once this stuff is kind of figured out, I want that fight back. She can say what she wants, but I’m coming for her regardless.”
And if that last sentiment wasn’t confident enough, she also made it clear that if anything, she’s feeling better about her chances against Cyborg than ever. She even took a jab at Cyborg’s recently released sparring footage against Olympic champion Claressa Shields.
“I’ve seen that,” Anderson said of the Cyborg/Shields footage, “and I was even more confident going into that fight. I seen a lot more holes in her game from that footage than I saw positives. I was even more excited for the fight. It was almost like the opposite of what people said and maybe we can rematch that fight when on the card when McGregor comes back.”
In the meantime, UFC 214 will go ahead, without Megan Anderson. The card is expected to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones, with Cris Cyborg vs. Tonya Evinger for the featherweight title, sharing the co-main spotlight with a welterweight title fight between Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia. The card takes place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, on Saturday, July 29th.
