Mei “V.V.” Yamaguchi is hopeful a wave of athletes from her homeland will join her on the ONE Championship roster.
The atomweight warrior spoke of her hopes for the future at a press conference to announce the organization’s debut live events in Tokyo, Japan in 2019.
She is scheduled to compete at one of two planned shows in the nation’s capital city, but she hopes she will not be the only native woman on those bills.
“Hopefully, it will be like that, because there are a lot of good women fighters in Japan who are looking for an opportunity to compete in bigger promotions,” she said.
“I think when I competed for ONE Championship, it’s been inspiring for them, so yes, please, give Japanese women the chance to compete in ONE Championship.”
Yamaguchi last competed in the main event of ONE: UNSTOPPABLE DREAMS in May, when she faced “Unstoppable” Angela Lee in a rematch for the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title.
Lee said she would be open to a third bout with her old rival, but first, she will challenge for the ONE Women’s Strawweight World Title in Singapore at ONE: HEART OF THE LION on 9 November.
