Away from his home in the Sierra Madre Occidental, Huichol artist Luis de la Cruz Lopez is working for more than ten hours a day at Fernando Montilla´s workshop, located in the heart of the state of Morelia to form the WBC belt, “Don Adolfo López Mateos, “a commemorative piece of art that the body will present to the winner of the bouts disputed in the two most important dates for Mexico, May 5th Battle of Puebla and Mexico´s Independence Day on September 15.

Luis, who poses a ancestral tradition from his community, is enthusiastically shaping the emblematic WBC belt with the message that his gods have commanded him, as he says that in this piece it is represented the origin of life.

De la Cruz has worked this technique for more than 25 years, an style he learned from his father and that now transmits to his seven children.

The artist, Fernando Montilla emphasized the importance of the artistic value of this work, which, as he himself mentioned, is invaluable, since in each of his designs it is represented the culture, traditions and the way “Huichol” culture understands the universe and its inception.

It was told to us that chakiras represent the heart of the deer, sun, fire and wind. The artist also commented that all Huichol artists should ask permission to their Gods to be able to work with chakiras.

With more than 50% of work progress, Luis explained that this design is based on the four cardinal points and that unlike other art pieces, this one tells a story.

Based on dreams and visions, Luis has dedicated day and night to shape this belt with more than 40 thousand chakiras.
