Top featherweight prospect Michael Conlan is headed back to Belfast and changing trainers, as he’s expecting a second child and wanted to be closer to home with his family.
Conlan moved to California about a year ago to train with Manny Robles, and the pairing has gone well, so it’s not a matter of needing a change of trainers. Conlan will now be working with Adam Booth.
“I have another baby on the way, so it is better for me and my family to be closer to home with me being active in my boxing career and being in camp basically all year round. I felt it was smarter for us as a family to move to back to the U.K. to be closer to our families. It will be better and a lot more comfortable to have that helping hand from grandmothers and sisters. We need to have a better support team around us. In Los Angeles, it was just us, so I needed to move back for my family’s sake.”
It’s a totally understandable position, and hopefully the change in camps will go smoothly. Booth, like Robles, is an acclaimed top trainer and has had many successes over the years, so you’d expect it to work out just on that and Conlan’s talent.
Conlan is 5-0 (4 KO) since turning pro in March 2017, fighting four of his bouts in the United States and one in Australia. He’s scheduled to fight again on March 17, when he’ll be back in New York for Top Rank’s St. Patrick’s Day card on ESPN.
