WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia (38-0, 30 KOs) is officially set to make his return to 135lbs in an attempt to unify world titles with IBF champion Robert Easter Jr. (21-0, 14 KOs). An opening press conference was held over the weekend where it was announced that their title unification bout will be held on July 28 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. The fight will be aired live on Showtime.
“There’s no question, not even close, that this clearly is the best fight of the summer,” said promoter Richard Schaefer. “Probably the best fight, one of the best fights, of the year. They are two world champions, they are two undefeated fighters, two athletes in their prime — combined 59 wins, no losses…I mean it doesn’t get better, it doesn’t get bigger than that.”
Robert Easter Jr. stepped to the podium first and offered these thoughts on the title unification fight:
“I’m excited. July 28th, I’ve been waiting on this day for so long…the best fighting the best. This is what boxing is all about. An July 28th you gonna get a lot of fireworks. You gonna get a helluva show…”
Mikey Garcia then had this to say on the fight:
“It’s exciting to finally land a fight here in L.A…I’m very excited for this fight, it’s gonna be my first opportunity to unify a division. You know, I’ve been champion in several divisions but a unification match is always an exciting challenge, you fighting another champion…A win over Easter will definitely help my legacy and that’s what I’m here to do…”
