The courage shown by former Spanish champion Miriam Gutiérrez in the ring is simply a reflection of her character and the way she has battled to get to where she stands. The “Queen” is a warrior in every sense and an advocate for women, who has managed to transcend in her country and internationally.

In a recent piece published by Marca, this media spoke with Miriam and her trainer Jero García about what her boxing experience has been like and all that she has achieved.

“Well, I started small. I started doing interclub, doing inter-gym fights competitions. We got the European championship, the WBA interim world championship, and eventually, I got a shot for the four world crowns (in her fight against Katie Taylor),” Gutierrez said in the interview.

Her trainer also talked about Miriam’s evolution and how boxing has been crucial to her development: “It’s important for everyone to have a corner. In this case, she had a corner booth in the ring and in life and it was the boxing school. It helped her, protected her, and tucked her in.”

Gutierrez, who also works in politics in her country and is the face of the women’s rights movement, also talked about past traumas and how she has been overcoming them thanks to all the new things she has experienced.

“I had a little hatred for men because of circumstances I have gone through in my life. In the end, I was called the queen by treatment, because I finally learned that men are there to help you and not to hurt you,” said the 38-year-old from Madrid.

Gutierrez made her debut in 2017 and worked her way up to world champion. Although she lost in her most recent clash against undisputed champion Katie Taylor, she proved that with hard work and determination it is possible to reach the highest level and bounce back after tough times.
