Welcome to part 2 of A Cautionary Tale. If you need to catch up, go right here for part 1 as we join young Jack and an older, more reserved Conor McGregor.
Jack watched in silence as a legend of the octagon fixed his kitchen sink, and offered the man a glass of water.
As McGregor accepted the beverage, Jack’s heart got the better of his manners and the words tumbled out. “How could this happen?” The old man pulled up a chair and shared a story.
“I did it lad. Beat them at their own game,” McGregor said, “and it was a ride.”
“The climb is so thrilling, you don’t realize how fast it’s happening.”
“but, when you all go to war, not everyone comes home.”
“So I spent a bit of money to distract myself.”
“I thought I’d outsmarted them all, but what about my team? my mates? There’s only room on the cage for one man.”
“I spent it all so I could be a person again, like when we were all together.”
Jack hung his head. The two men sat in silence until McGregor got up to finish the job.
