Natasha Jonas out to build Katie Taylor rivalry and set up eventual domestic 'super-fight'

Natasha Jonas knows she has a long way to go to seal a professional date with Katie Taylor

Natasha Jonas hopes she can build a domestic rivalry with Katie Taylor which will end in Britain’s first women’s professional “super-fight”.

Jonas and Taylor, both signed to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom stable, fought at the London 2012 Olympics where the Irish superstar claimed a quarter-final victory on her way to a gold medal.

While Taylor has gone on to win WBA and IBF lightweight titles, Jonas briefly retired before coming back as a professional and she most recently claimed the WBA International super-featherweight title with a win over Taoussy L’Hadji in Liverpool.

“We’re currently at two different weight divisions. She’s a double world champion now so I’ve got to play catch-up and get my own belt,” said Jonas, who is backing the Sky Sports and Women’s Sport Trust #ShowUp campaign.

“I’ve got to become a world champion in my own right before I can start putting meetings together, to unify anything.

“I don’t want to come to the table with nothing so it’s all about me paving my own way and making my own path because my journey isn’t about Katie Taylor, it’s about me, but if we meet up at the end that’s brilliant.

“Every sport needs a domestic rivalry and you had (Chris) Eubank, (Nigel) Benn and (Steve) Collins, and now you’ve got your James DeGale, Callum Smith and George Groves and Eubank Jr. They’re fights that everyone wants to see.

“It’s good people are having the same conversation about women’s boxing and it’s good me and Katie are part of that. It’s quite flattering to be honest.

“Potentially there’s a super-fight between two women.”
