Nery destroys Canoy in comeback fight

Unbeaten former world bantamweight champion Luis “Pantera” Nery (27-0, 21 KOs) exhibited a brutal display of power and knocked out Filipino Jason Canoy (29-9, 19 KOs) in the third round in front of a huge crowd at the Gasmart Stadium, home of the Tijuana Toros baseball team.

Inspired by chants of “Nery Nery,” Nery kept his promise to seek a quick knockout. The fight began explosively when Nery sent Canoy to the canvas in the first round with a powerful hook left to the jaw. After a slower second round, Nery punished Canoy with power shots in round three and drove him to the canvas again. Canoy beat the count but Nery finished him with his follow-up barrage prompting a stoppage. Time was 2:44. With the win, Nery becomes WBC silver bantamweight champion and is in line to contest for the world title which is currently vacant.

In the co-feature, WBC interim female mini-flyweight champion Kenia “Jaguarcita” Enríquez (21-1, 9 KOs) retained her title by ten round unanimous decision over Norleidys Graterol (12-1, 10 KOs). Enriquez comprehensively outboxed the power-punching challenger to win 100-90, 100-89, 100-89.

In a special attraction, one of Zanfer’s strongest prospects Omar “Pollo” Aguilar (10-0, 10 KOs) spectacularly blasted out Carlos Antonio Zatarain (12-5, 6 KOs) in the first round of a super lightweight contest.
