Niall Kennedy and Sean McComb score big Boston wins

There were two wins from two for the Irish tonight in Boston on the big Matchroom USA DAZN show at the TD Garden.

Belfast lightweight Sean McComb and Wexford heavyweight Niall Kennedy both scored victories in the two opening bouts of the card.

Prospect McComb stopped Peruvian journeyman Carlos Galindo, who was coming into the fight off the back of an upset win, in the third round of their scheduled four.

The Turf Lodge southpaw, as he has in all his pro fights so far, targeted the body well and Galindo finally wilted to the canvas in the third.

The win, his fourth in nine weeks, sees McComb improved his record to 4(3)-0 while Galindo drops to 1(0)-6(2).

In a battle of the undefeated big men, Kennedy dropped and outpointed Brendan Barrett.

Barrett, an MMA convert, could not deal with Kennedy’s skill and speed early on, wrestling the Gorey Garda to the canvas in the second and receiving a stern warning.

The American did enjoy a smidgen of success with looping overhands in the third but Kennedy would retake control, hurting Barrett in the fourth and dropping him heavily with a short sharp counter in the fifth.

Having done well to see out the fifth, Barrett, to his credit, came out swinging in the sixth final round but Kennedy was able to box conservatively, bar a ropey few seconds towards the close, to see out the win.

The Celtic Warriors fighter was confirmed the victor on the cards with scores of 58-55 and 60-53 x3.

The win sees Kennedy improve to 12(7)-0-1 and get back to winning ways having been held to a draw last time out. Barrett drops to 7(5)-1(0)-2 following the first career loss.

There are more Irish fighters in action later tonight in Boston, with Belfast super featherweight James Tennyson challenging IBF champion Tevin Farmer and Wicklow lightweight Katie Taylor defending her IBF and WBA titles versus Cindy Serrano.
