NIETES STOPS REVECO IN 7TH ROUND

By JOSE MONTY FLORES

INGLEWOOD, California — IBF world flyweight champion Donnie ‘Ahas’ Nietes of the Philippines showed another world-class performance by stopping his mandatory challenger and former world champion Juan Carlos Reveco of Argentina Saturday night at The Forum here.
Nietes completely dominated the fight with almost knocking down Reveco in Round 6. Nietes continued to attack in the 7th round and landed a solid punch to drop Reveco.
Referee Edward Hernandez Sr. stopped the fight with 53 seconds remaining.
Nietes, the Philippines’ longest reigning world champion, improved his record to 41 wins with 23 knockouts against only one loss and four draws.
It was Nietes’ first title defense of the vacant crown he won via a unanimous decision against Komgrich Nantapech last April 29 at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu.
It was also Nietes’s debut in HBO.
“I was not really eyeing for a knockout win but I saw the opportunity in my punches,” said Nietes.
“It’s a big win for me since this is my first fight in HBO,” said Nietes.
His manager Michael Aldeguer said that Nietes had really trained hard for this fight at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.
Nietes thanked his family and all his supporters and fans in his hometown in Murcia, Bacolod, Cebu and the Philippines.
Meanwhile, former world champion Brian Viloria lost by a unanimous decision to Artem Dalakian in their battle for the vacant WBA world flyweight title. Dalakian was deducted a point in Round 9 for repeatedly pushing Viloria’s head down.
However, the three judges Raul Caiz Sr., Robert Hoyle and Pat Russell all scored identical 118-109 all in favor of Dalakian.
McWilliams Arroyo won by a majority decision against Carlos Cuadras to capture the vacant WBC Silver super flyweight title in the undercard.
Judges Tony Crebs (97-93) and Pat Russell (98-92) gave it to Arroyo but judge Fernando Villarreal saw it 95-95.
Anahi Torres pocketed the vacant WBC International female light flyweight crown via a unanimous decision against Louisa Hawton.
