During the celebrations of our 55th convention in Baku, Azerbaijan, from October 1 to 6 at The Fairmont Baku Hotel is a luxury resort located in the Flame Towers complex, we will honor the “LEGENDARY CHAMPION” Nino Benvenuti.
Nino made his professional debut in 1961, beating Ben Ali Allala by six-round decision. He won 29 bouts before battling for the Italian middleweight title against Tomasso Truppi, whom he beat with a ninth-round knockout. He won his 46th match, facing former world champion Denny Moyer, whom he defeated by decision.
After 55 bouts won, including a rematch with Truppi, who he defeated again, he faced champion Sandro Mazzinghi in Milan on June 18, 1965. This fight was highly anticipated in this region since both were Italian and both really wanted to fight each other. to decide who was the best. Benvenuti won the fight and the world super welterweight belt after knocking him out in the sixth round.
On December 17 he faced Mazzinghi in a rematch and defeated him again, retaining his super welterweight title by decision in 15 rounds. He then traveled to South Korea and lost his unbeaten record and super welterweight world title against Soo Kim Ki. Benvenuti did not give up and decided to go up to the middleweight division.
On April 17, 1967, he defeated Emile Griffith in a 15-round decision at Madison Square Garden in New York in the first of his confrontation trilogy. In this way he regained the world title, this time the World Boxing Council belt.
Benvenuti, a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, finished his career in 1971, having won 82 of his 90 fights, tying once and losing only seven times.
For all of the above and for being an example inside and outside the ring, Nino Benvenuti will receive this deserved recognition.
