Earlier today, we talked about what’s going to be next for Nonito Donaire, which is his World Boxing Super Series bantamweight tournament final matchup against either Emmanuel Rodriguez or Naoya Inoue.

Rodriguez and Inoue fight on May 18 in Glasgow, Scotland, and the winner meets Donaire later this year. Donaire brutally knocked out substitute opponent Stephon Young on Saturday, and after the fight, he indicated that he wants the guy everyone sees as the toughest opponent at 118: Naoya Inoue.

“Both guys (Rodriguez and Inoue) are amazing, but there was an unspoken thing with me and (Inoue), and how much I respect him, and I love Japan, as well,” Donaire said. “There was an unspoken respect and a goal between me and Naoya Inoue that we were going to go to the finals. So he’s always supported me to get to the final, that’s where I’m gonna be supporting him to get to the final so we can face off with each other.”

Donaire (40-5, 26 KO) is 36 years old and has made a pretty triumphant return to bantamweight after fighting at 122 and 126 from 2012-2018. The wins over Ryan Burnett and Stephon Young come with their asterisks — Burnett got injured, Young was a replacement opponent — but it’s been a pretty remarkable story all the same, and a matchup with Inoue (17-0, 15 KO) would give him a shot at doing something truly special against a feared, unbeaten, much younger fighter.
