A few notes from around the boxing world:

  • Light heavyweight mandatory challenger Eleider “Storm” Alvarez (19-0, 10 KOs) is in need of a new opponent for his Premier Boxing Champions co-feature on July 29 (Spike, 9 p.m. ET/PT) at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada. Alvarez, a Colombian based in Montreal, was due to face former world champion Chad Dawson (34-4, 19 KOs) but Dawson suffered a shoulder injury in his training camp, his team said Tuesday.

“While we were waiting for Chad Dawson to join the planned (media) conference call (Tuesday), we learned from his manager that he injured his shoulder in training, and that he has withdrawn from his fight against Eleider Alvarez,” promoter Yvon Michel said. “We are already looking for a replacement opponent so Eleider retains his spot on Spike TV.”

Alvarez is the mandatory challenger for the winner of the main event between world champion Adonis Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) and Thomas Williams Jr. (20-1, 14 KOs). Michel put Alvarez on the card to help stoke interest in the possible all-Montreal showdown between Stevenson and Alvarez later this year or in early 2017.

  • Former middleweight titleholder David Lemieux (35-3, 32 KOs) is eyeing a ring return this fall, co-promoter Camille Estephan told ESPN.com. Lemieux, 27, of Montreal, lost his title by eighth-round knockout to Gennady Golovkin in their unification fight in October but bounced back with a strong performance in a fourth-round knockout of Glen Tapia on May 7 on the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan undercard. Estephan said the reason for not having anything specific yet is his camp is waiting for HBO to get its schedule for the fall in order. “We had to wait for the plans of Canelo, then a date for Golovkin and now (a date for Manny) Pacquiao,” he said. “Once all this is settled, we hope to have the date on HBO this fall — September, October.”
  • Junior bantamweight Naoya Inoue (10-0, 8 KOs), the 23-year-old Japanese prodigy nicknamed “The Monster” who has already won world titles in two weight classes, will make his third defense on Sept. 4 in Zama, Japan. Inoue will face Petchbarngborn Kokietgym (38-7-1, 18 KOs), 30, of Thailand. In 2014, Inoue gave up his junior flyweight title, moved up two weight classes and demolished Omar Narvaez in the second round to claim a junior bantamweight belt. Takuma Inoue (7-0, 2 KOs), the 20-year-old younger brother and an elite prospect in his own right, will also be on the card against Froilan Saludar (23-1-1, 14 KOs), 27, of the Philippines.
