Undisputed female welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus is vowing to shun the comfort zone, and concentrate fully on the combat zone next time around, in her rematch with heavy handed Kali Reis.
“The First Lady of Boxing,” told the World Boxing Council, she had built up a decent points lead tally against her opponent…and then made the mistake of relaxing at the StubHub Center in Carson City, California. The result was more appreciably more painful than a stubbed toe!
Cecilia was dropped albeit momentarily on to the seat of her pants in the seventh round, via a hard right hook to the face. The first time she’s ever visited the canvass! And she had to work diligently to regain her momentum, plus the advantage, in a rockier last four rounds. She pledged: “Next time it’ll be a whole different story. Lesson learned!”
A great and competitive fight for HBO’s first ever venture into Women’s Boxing with 1.5 million views!
For the rematch Cecilia promises to tighten up her defence, in a six weeks camp, supervised by Coach Jonathan Banks, pledging: “You will see a totally different fight!”
Cecilia praised ex champion Kali, who’d moved down from middleweight to fight and find her saying: “She was stronger than the girls in my division.”
Cecilia’s Mum wore a worried expression in the audience, as tables momentarily turned, up in ring, before her daughter regained the driving seat. Cecilia says Mum wants to be close, and it’s much better than for her to sit at home.
