British junior welterweight Ohara Davies found himself in some pretty hot water after making some insensitive comments pertaining to the Hillsborough tragedy (at least indirectly, anyway). The fallout of Davies comments not only caused an uproar in some parts of the UK, but also caused promoter Eddie Hearn to pull him from a scheduled Feb. 3 fight.

Davies has since parted ways with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, but admitted that his controversial persona has long been an act to market himself. The 25-year-old fighter has since signed a deal with MTK Global and says he’s ready to turn the page and be his true self — not the provocateur everyone has come to know him as.

Speaking on his alignment with MTK, Davies tells WBN:

“They treat every fighter like the only fighter they’ve got, and that’s what I like. They’ve got a PR team and they have the help to offer me.

“Everybody who knows about boxing knows who I am, I don’t want to wear this mask anymore.

“I now really just want to be me, I don’t really care if it sells I just want to be me.”

With MTK being a management outfit, and not a promoter, Davies also mentions that he’ll soon be making announcement on what banner he’ll be promoted under in the near future.
