On this day in history, Roger Mayweather became a two-weight world champion

Roger Mayweather become a two-weight world champion by defeating WBC super lightweight champion Rene Arrendo at the Sports Arena Los Angeles. Mayweather, uncle of former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr, boxed superbly in a toe-to-toe thriller, flooring Arrendo three times in the sixth round for a TKO win. The “Black Mamba” defended his 140lb title four times before he was stopped for a second time in a rematch with the Mexican ring legend Julio Cesar Chavez in 1989. Chavez, who was undefeated with a 62-0 record, forced Mayweather to retire on his stool after the tenth round, four years after knocking the American out in two rounds to defend his WBC super featherweight title.
