Middleweight Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan (28-2, 20 KOs) has told Sky Sports that he’ll be getting a feature on September’s Canelo-Golovkin undercard, as promised to him by his Golden Boy promotional company.
O’Sullivan says he always knew the rematch between Canelo and Golovkin would get ironed out as there was simply too much money to be made, but he’s hoping the date provides him with some good fortune as well, including a shot at the Canelo-GGG winner.
“I have a five-fight contract with Golden Boy, with three still remaining, and they promised me, after my last fight, that I would be on this September undercard before being in line to face the winner.”
Spike is currently on a 6 fight win streaking since getting stopped by Chris Eubank Jr. back in late 2015, with the last five of those fights coming by way of stoppage. With his renewed confidence the Irish fighter says he’s hoping to get a fight with Golovkin, believing he has what it takes to put a loss on his record.
“All my focus now is on September and then getting the winner. Canelo would, financially, be the bigger fight eventually, but I’ve always wanted to face ‘GGG’. That’s my dream fight, and I believe I can beat him and take his ‘0’.”
Most, if not all, fans wouldn’t be inclined to agree with Spike, but I suppose you have to believe in yourself first. No word yet on who O’Sullivan will be facing in September, but it’s supposed to be a credible opponent.
