DAVAO CITY (Aug. 3) – Carlo Paalam of Cagayan de Oro scored an upset over 2016 Rio Olympic Games champion Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan via a split decision to enter the semifinal round of the Olympic men’s flyweight (48-52 kg) division today at the Kokugikan Arena in Japan.
The fight was stopped due to a cut on Zoirov’s left eyelid caused by an accidental head butt in Round 2.
The 23-year-old Paalam will next fight on Aug. 5 against Ryomei Tanaka of Japan, who earlier defeated WBA Future Champions Tournament winner Yuberjen Martinez of Colombia by a split decision.
