By Eric Baldwin: Manny Pacquiao says he liked the recent fight between welterweight Kell brook and IBF/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin last September. Pacquiao said that Golovkin was simply too strong for Brook.

Unlike some of the other fighters that are saying that Golovkin should move up in weight, Pacquiao says it’s up to Golovkin if he wants to move up to light heavyweight to fight bigger guys.

“That was a good fight with Triple G and Brook,” said Pacquiao to fighthyoe.com. “He’s too strong for Kell Brook.”

When asked if Golovkin should move up two weight classes to fight Sergey Kovalev at light heavyweight, Pacquiao said, “It depends on him on what his plans is in his career.”

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum recently jokingly mentioned possibly wanting to match him against Golovkin if the Filipino fighter wins his fight this Saturday night against WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas on Top Rank pay-per-view from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Pacquiao is expected to win the fight with the 27-year-old Vargas handily. However, Arum later said that he wasn’t serious about wanting to match Pacquiao against Golovkin, and that he would never do that. What’s interesting is that Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is saying that he’d be open to having Pacquiao fight former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who is even bigger than Golovkin in terms of weight. If they’re open to fighting Canelo, then they should be open to a fight against Golovkin as well.

Brook moved up in weight to fight Golovkin at 160 in part due to his inability to get the bigger names to fight him in the welterweight division. Brook was stuck between a rock and a hard place when he made the move to fight Golovkin in his weight class. Brook had been a pro for 12 years, and had never been able to get any of the big names to fight him.

Golovkin is not going to move up to the light heavyweight division to fight his friend Sergey Kovalev. The time for Golovkin to move up would be right now, as he’s 34, and is still in his prime more or less. However, wants to clean out the middleweight division, and it’s going to take too long for him to accomplish that.

By the time that Golovkin does beat all the top names at 160, if he ever does, he’ll likely be at least 36, possibly older. That’s probably too old for Pacquiao to move up two weight classes to fight guys that would have a 20 pound weight advantage over him.
