That’s all she wrote, folks. Former two-weight world champion Paulie Malignaggi (36-8, 7 KOs) will call it a career after getting stopped by Sam Eggington over the weekend. Malginaggi formally announced his decision on Monday, which marked the 19th anniversary of his first amateur boxing match.
Here’s the message Malignaggi released through social media:
“19 years ago today – March 6, 1998 – I entered the ring for the first time as an amateur. That makes this as good a time as any for me to officially announce my retirement from competition,” Malignaggi wrote. “My life is in a place 19 years later that I never dreamed it could be in. And I have boxing to thank for that. I gave absolutely everything I had to this sport for almost 2 decades, and I will never lose the many, many incredible memories that were created during that time.”
At age 36, Malignaggi leaves the sport having won world titles in both the 140 and 147lb divisions. He was known as a good technician that had zero power and brittle hands — all of which makes his career accomplishments more impressive.
Paulie did have a big mouth, though, and being able to promote yourself is an important attribute in this business. It also made him one of the biggest personalities in the sport. But Paulie wasn’t all talk, he’s shown tremendous heart in the ring time and time again — particularly in 2006 loss to Miguel Cotto where he lasted the distance with a broken jaw.
Now Malignaggi will focus solely on his career as a boxing commentator where he’s done an excellent job for both Showtime and Sky Sports, providing excellent insight for fans.
“I’m looking forward to a long, fruitful career now behind the mic, staying around the sport I love so much and the sport that changed my life for the better,” Malignaggi said.
Best of luck to Malignaggi going forward. He still has a great gig and plenty to look forward to after his career as a professional fighter.
