DAVAO CITY (Aug. 3) – Nesty “Nesh” Petecio of Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur bowed to Japan’s Sean Irie in the finals of the XXXII Olympic women’s featherweight (54-58kg) division today at the Kokugikan Arena in Japan.
The 20-year-old Irie won by a unanimous decision over Petecio, 29, with all four judges, scored 29-28 and one judge 30-27.
But despite this, Petecio became the third boxer to win an Olympic silver medal after Anthony Villanueva (men’s feather) at the 1964 Tokyo Games and Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco (men’s light fly) at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
She is also the first Filipina boxer to win an Olympic silver medal.
Petecio will receive P5 million for her silver medal from the national government
