Photos: Ola Afolabi Sweats Down To Make Weight For Daser Fight
Hamburg – The boxers have stepped on the scale at the official weigh in Hanseviertel, got ready for their fights and now the stage is set after everything went off peacefully. Major contender Ola Afolabi appeared on the scale had 1.8 kg [3.96-pounds] of excess weight and had to sweat vigorously by means of several sauna sessions over a three hour period.
Eventually the limit of 90.7 kg [200-pounds] was reached. The event called ‘Big Deal’ in Hamburg’s Barclaycard Arena can go forward as planned.
The interior of the arena will be transformed into an exclusive dinner banquet with more than 60 tables.
The main battle will have unbeaten ECB-Fighter and dial Hamburger Mario Daser (89.7 kg; unbeaten in 12 fights, 5 thereof by Ko) taking on Afolabi (90.7 kg; 22 wins, 11 thereof by Ko, 5 Losses and 4 draw). There fight involves the cruiserweight IBO International title and the WBO regional championship.
“To be honest I don’t care that much for those belts“, Afolabi said after finally making weight. “But now I will take them back home anyways. I had been a little out of shape before taking the fight so I had to lose some pounds. But that doesn’t matter. I am used to stuff like this. All that matters now is what happens in the ring. I will take this guy to school and give him a good beating that’s for sure.“
Afolabi’s opponent Mario Daser didn’t have any problems making weight in the first place. The self-made millionaire weighed in at 89.7 kg (197.75 lbs.).
“I am a professional and very disciplined,” said Daser. “I have trained very hard and I have a good nutritionist who monitors my weight. Ola may be more experienced than me. But obviously that hasn’t helped him to show up on weight. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. I am ready to face my biggest challenge so far. I don’t know if I can beat him but I can guarantee that I will give him a hell of a fight.”
Heavyweight Christian Hammer (120.0 kg; 2. the WBO world ranking) defends his WBO regional championship title against Frenchman Zine Eddine Benmakhlouf (105,0kg).
Igor Mikhalkin meets Thomas Oosthuizen (both 79.1 kg). And they battle for the light heavyweight title of the IBO.
