Competitive grappling was in full effect on Saturday and the fourth edition of the Polaris Pro Invitational brought some of the best athletes back to the mat in United Kingdom. In an event that was a solid card from top to bottom, Fernando “Terere” defeated Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro while Garry Tonon earned a big win over UFC lightweight Gilbert “Durinho” Burns.
The match between Terere and Shaolin brought two of the most well-respected names to the mat. Much of the match was contested at a slow pace, but this was due to the technical expertise of both men. Terere used his aggressive passing game to continue to advance position and take advantage of the small openings that he found. The furthest he progressed was to side control, but that was enough to keep Shaolin on the defensive and earn the unanimous decision victory.
“Slow” would not be the word to describe the match between Tonon and Burns. Burns came out very aggressive and attacked Tonon a number of times. He even locked in his own heel hook attempt before bailing and attacking Tonon’s back. Even though he gave up a size disadvantage to the UFC competitor and world champion grappler, Tonon remained very composed and found the opening that he needed. He secured an inside heel hook, and Burns fought momentarily before tapping in the final moments of the match.
American grapplers Dillion Danis and AJ Agazarm were both successful in their matches. Danis defeated Jackson Sousa with his own heel hook, while Agazarm defeated Minowaman via triangle choke.
Souza applied pressure with multiple double leg attempts; almost getting caught in a choke for his efforts. Danis would land his own takedown attempt that set up the end of the bout, as he grasped for a leg and shifted back to the leg lock.
Agazarm and Minowaman put on a show worthy of professional wrestling promotions as the two taunted each other and even dressed the part. However, Agazarm earned an early takedown that he was able to use to advance position before locking in the triangle that finished the contest.
The replay of Polaris 4 will be available on the Polaris Pro Invitational website.
