DAVAO CITY – Filipino challenger Ryan Rey “Mr. Pogi” Ponteras and his team arrived today (July 26) in Eastern London of Eastern Cape in South Africa for his slated championship fight against International Boxing Organization (IBO) world super flyweight champion Gideon Buthelezi on July 28 at the International Convention Centre.
Ponteras, who is also currently the Philippine flyweight champion, is accompanied by his trainer Bruce Lerio and Dr. JB Pinol, daughter of his former manager Manny Pinol.
Ponteras, who is toting a record of 20 wins with 9 knockouts against 11 defeats and one draw now managed by Dr. Krista Pinol,
The 27-year old native of Panabo City previously won by a 5th round technical decision against Felipe Cagubcob Jr. last May 9 in Isabela City.
Buthelezi, on the other hand, has a record of 19 wins with 4 knockouts against five losses and no draw. He will be making his third title defense of the vacant crown he won by a unanimous decision against fellow countryman Makazole Tete in 2015 at the Orient Theatre in East London.
Buthelezi last defended it successfully via a UD over Angel Aviles last March 31 at the Indoor Sports Centre in Kempton Park, Guateng.
The Buthelezi-Ponteras title fight is promoted by Ayanda Matiti of Xaba Promotions under the Boxing South Africa Commission.
Also featured in the card is the championship fight for the vacant IBF Inter-Continental super bantamweight crown between Lodumo Lamati (11-0-1) and Luis Melendez (47-10-1).
The other bouts are Mzuyukile Magwaca (18-0-2) against Yesner Talavera (15-4-1) for vacant IBF Inter-continental bantamweight title and Siphamandla Baleni (11-1-1) versus Bangile Nyangani (4-0-0) for the South African minimumweight title.
