Prograis-Velasco winner punches ticket to WBSS

Regis Prograis will defend his WBC interim world title against Juan Jose Velasco on July 14.

SHOWTIME

Regis Prograis (21-0, 8 KOS) currently holds the WBC’s junior welterweight interim title following his knockout win over Julius Indongo in March. And as he prepares to defend that interim title on July 14 against Juan Jose Velasco (20-0, 12 KOs), it has been confirmed that there will be even more at stake with a World Boxing Super Series bid on the line.

Tournament organizer Kalle Sauerland offered this statement via WBN:

“Prograis is an exciting athlete capable of catapulting his status to new heights of sporting glory in the Ali Trophy tournament. He is facing Velasco, a tough challenger. We are sure of one thing: another belt will enter the Ali Trophy tournament!”

Prograis, 29, says he’s excited for the opportunity to participate in the upcoming tournament as he’s eager to prove that he’s the best 140-pounder in the world while Velasco, 31, looks to upset the favorite and earn his place in the tourney.

But should Prograis take care of business against Velasco and enter the WBSS, I’m already anticipating a potential showdown between Prograis and fellow standout prospect Josh Taylor.

Tell me, fans, who would you favor in that match-up?
